Avital BalwitSenior RA
I am a second year studying Political and Social Thought. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. I chose to be an RA in the IRC because I had a wonderful experience with living in international environments in the past. In high school I received a scholarship to attend the US campus of United World College, one of a network of international schools that bring students from over seventy countries to live and learn together as they develop citizen diplomacy skills. This transformative experience gave me friends from around the world and a sense of global citizenship. I enjoy volunteering and currently serve as a student board member at Madison House, UVA’s volunteering hub. Before this, I have volunteered for causes such as alleviating homelessness, anti-human trafficking initiatives, overdose death reduction, and tutoring in prisons. I have been politically active for years, volunteering and advocating for progressive candidates. I am spending this summer in San Francisco working at a Democracy Tech company. My other UVA related activities include editing for the Virginia Review of Politics, being a member of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society, and participating in Roosevelt Society -- UVA’s bipartisan discussion group. I look forward to meeting you all! If you ever want coffee, a running partner, or just a conversation, my door is open.
